New Hyundai i20 variant may be affordable?

Hyundai shocked the premium hatchback segment with the starting price of the third-gen i20 which is over a lakh quite its closest rivals. However, it seems the i20 will get a cheaper base variant which might be launched in January 2021 or maybe even sooner.

Based on an RTO application for the Hyundai i20 with the 83PS 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to the 5-speed manual transmission, it’ll get an Era variant below the present entry-point of the Magna variant. This variant will likely be priced around Rs 6 lakh. Its 80kg lower gross vehicle weight suggests it’ll miss out on tons of features. We’ve only seen the appliance for the petrol engine therefore the Era variant won’t even get the selection of the 100PS 1.5-litre diesel .

The most affordable variant of the new i20 will likely miss out on rear AC vents, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, rear power windows, and any kind of sound system . It could offer ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, front power windows, dual front airbags, halogen headlamps, internally adjustable ORVMs, and 15-inch steel wheels. While this does make the i20 less appealing, this variant would be more attainable for those on a strict budget. Buyers could enhance the feature-set with accessories over time.

Currently, the i20 is out there at introductory prices ranging between Rs 6.80 lakh and Rs 11.18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It also gets the selection of a CVT automatic drive with the 1.2-litre petrol engine. The new 120PS 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine option gets the choice of a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic only. Hyundai has rejuvenated its presence within the premium hatchback segment where it’ll still rival the likes of the Maruti Baleno/ Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo.
