Mahindra Thar : Four Star in Global NCAP Crash Test

The second-gen Mahindra Thar has been quite popular since its launch on October 2. The off-road icon, which in its latest incarnation has also seen attention on practicality, has been crash tested by Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) as a part of its #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. The Thar has secured a reasonably good four-star rating out of 5 .

The test was performed under the quality norms of worldwide NCAP where the Thar was made to crash at 64kmph. The SUV’s bodyshell was marked stable and capable of taking further beating. It scored four out of 5 stars in both, adult occupant protection (12.52 out of 17.00) and child occupant protection (41.11 out of 49.00). Besides, the Thar has also passed the ESC and side impact tests conducted in accordance with UN standards.

With three-point seatbelts altogether seating positions and dual airbags, the Thar provided good support to the driver’s and passenger’s heads and necks. All the opposite body areas were given good-to-marginal protection. Only the driving force footwell area was marked unstable.

In the case of kid occupant protection, the Thar scored 41.11 out of 49.00, leading to four stars. this will be credited to the ISOFIX anchorages seatbelt for all seating positions being available within the SUV as standard with variants (AX option and LX) offering front-facing seats. the kid protection was sufficient enough to stop excessive movement of the top of the 18-month crash test dummy. Interestingly, this is often also the very best child occupant protection score any made-in-India car has received within the Global NCAP’s latest crash tests.

The Thar’s crash test score comes after Mahindra’s promise of prioritising safety in its cars. The second-gen Thar comes with a bunch of safety features including dual-front airbags, hill hold and hill descent control, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and rear parking sensors. The second-gen Thar retails between Rs 9.80 lakh and Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom). It currently features a waiting period of up to seven months.
